Capcom announces Project REX to integrate AI into RE Engine
Capcom has announced Project REX, a multi-stage initiative to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine.” During the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026, lead programmer Satoshi Ishida detailed how the company plans to integrate artificial intelligence into internal development workflows to address the increasing complexity and scale of modern video games.
The project aims to improve efficiency, performance, and quality assurance (QA) without using AI to generate final in-game content such as characters or environments. Instead, the technology will assist developers with technical and repetitive tasks. Key components of Project REX include:
• RE:Dox: Standardizes different data formats to accelerate processing. • RE:UI: Creates a lighter developer interface to save memory. • RE:Log: Centralizes logs and improves multi-language support for global teams. • RE:Flows: Converts visual scripts and node graphs into standardized programming code. • RE:Runtime: Manages large quantities of characters and objects more efficiently.
By automating routine tasks like coding, bug detection, and data management, Capcom intends to allow its more than 2,000 developers to focus on creative aspects of production. Some components of the REX project are planned to be released as open source to facilitate AI training and industry standards.
