Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword omits classic puzzle boxes, adds new environmental puzzles

Capcom's upcoming title Onimusha: Way of the Sword, featured on the cover of Game Informer, departs from earlier entries in the series by removing the traditional puzzle‑box mechanics and other minigames. In an interview conducted in Osaka, Japan, director Satoru Nihei confirmed that the development team chose to focus on sword‑play action, replacing the puzzle boxes with larger, stage‑integrated environmental puzzles. One example described involves matching light patterns from decorative windows to a set of masks to progress through a laboratory level. Producer Akihito Kadowaki hinted that the series' “Phantom Realm”—a recurring mini‑combat arena—may still appear in some form, though no definitive confirmation was given.

The game is slated for release in September, and Capcom plans to accompany the launch with exclusive gameplay videos and behind‑the‑scenes content on Game Informer’s platforms.
