Cape Coast floods kill four, collapse eight houses

A torrential rainstorm that swept Cape Coast, Ghana over the weekend of June 19‑21, 2026 caused severe flooding across numerous communities, including Ekon, Abura, Ameen Sangari, DVLA/Nokans, Episkia, Mmeaasem, Adisadel and Nkanfoa. Eight primarily mud‑built houses collapsed, resulting in four deaths – three children and one adult – and five people were left in critical condition.

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly reported that 736 residents were displaced and 95 people were directly affected by the disaster. Injured victims were taken to Ewim Polyclinic and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they received emergency medical care. Metropolitan Chief Executive George Justice Arthur visited the injured and bereaved families, offering condolences and support.

Authorities have begun demolishing collapsed and unsafe structures and are initiating work to clear blocked gutters and develop a comprehensive drainage system. The assembly also announced plans to remove buildings erected on waterways, storm drains and other unauthorized sites, and warned residents against illegal waste dumping, stating that violators will face penalties.
