Cape Coast, Ghana mudslide kills toddler, injures three

A rain‑triggered mudslide struck the Tantri neighbourhood of Cape Coast, Ghana, on the afternoon of June 19. The slide collapsed three homes, killing a 20‑month‑old toddler, Hanson Mensah, and seriously injuring three women – Elizabeth Kyerede (43), Maame Badua (25) and Ella (17). Victims were rescued by nearby residents and taken to Ewim Polyclinic, where the toddler was pronounced dead, while Ella was transferred to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for a severe head injury.

The incident occurred amid widespread flooding that inundated roads, homes, shops and parts of the University of Cape Coast campus. Authorities, including the Ghana National Fire Service and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive George Justice Arthur, responded to the scene. The disaster highlighted ongoing concerns about urban drainage, waste disposal and the city’s vulnerability to intense rainfall.

Overall, three buildings were damaged, two of which were unoccupied at the time. The landslide prompted safety advisories for students and staff to remain indoors until floodwaters receded.
