Cape Peninsula University of Technology faces unrest and arson

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has faced significant unrest following days of violent protests and arson attacks, including a blaze at the Old Education building on the Bellville Campus. The protests were driven by student concerns regarding academic documents, governance, and the proposed 2027 Financial Recovery Plan, which leaders warn could make higher education inaccessible.

In response to the violence and property damage, the university suspended all activities and ordered students to vacate campus residences. However, student leaders noted that many students lack the financial means to travel home and intend to remain on campus. At least three people have been injured during the unrest.

Central SRC President Liyabulela Gela condemned the destruction of university property and called for independent investigations into the fires. Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela stated that talks have begun with all parties to restore calm, noting that the university’s withdrawal of the 2027 financial plan serves as a starting point for negotiations.
