Cape Town experiences unusually warm, dry winter amid El Niño conditions

After a massive storm hit Cape Town on May 11, the city entered an unusually warm and dry winter. July recorded the lowest rainfall in 91 years, dam levels sit at 78.4 % and the year‑to‑date is the hottest on record, with a fire breaking out on Table Mountain. A persistent high‑pressure system has blocked typical cold fronts, producing sunny, still weather and heightened pollution.

Residents have taken advantage of the mild temperatures, flocking to local beaches and sharing videos on social media. At the same time, locals express concern over the lack of rain, warning that insufficient winter precipitation could jeopardise water supplies for the upcoming summer. Experts link the abnormal pattern to a strong El Niño event, which is reducing cold‑front activity over the Western Cape and contributing to the drought‑like conditions.
