Cape Town hosts African Boating Conference to boost marine sector

The African Boating Conference opened in Cape Town as a sold-out event, bringing together marine businesses and government officials to discuss the recreational marine sector’s potential for economic growth. The two-day event, hosted by Superyacht Cape Town, focuses on addressing challenges such as manufacturing costs, trade barriers, skills shortages, and rising diesel costs.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Invest Cape Town representatives discussed tools to track the removal of investment barriers. Winde also noted the impact of US trade tariffs on South African boatbuilders who rely on American technology and components. Additionally, discussions explored the role of artificial intelligence in improving engineering and manufacturing efficiency.

At the conference, V&A Waterfront CEO Graham Wood outlined ambitions to establish Cape Town as a premier superyacht destination. Proposed developments at the V&A Waterfront, including the new EDITION hotel and upgraded facilities at Quay 7, aim to transform the area into a luxury gateway for exploring Africa’s coastlines.
