Cape Town mass shootings kill seven, injure five

Police in South Africa's Western Cape investigated two linked mass‑shooting incidents on Wednesday evening. The first attack occurred at about 20:10 in the Lost City area of Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, where gunmen opened fire on five men outside a local tuck shop. Three victims aged 18, 19 and 51 were killed on the spot and two others, aged 17 and 22, were taken to hospital. Roughly twenty minutes later, a second shooting unfolded at a home in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, leaving four young victims (ages 17‑20) dead and three more injured.

Colonel André Traut, a Western Cape police spokesperson, said the motive remains unknown and detectives are pursuing all leads. The Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit has taken over the investigations. Police have increased deployments in the affected suburbs, promising a visible presence and ongoing crime‑prevention operations to stabilise the communities.
