Cape Town N1 reopens after truck strikes pedestrian bridge

The N1 highway in Cape Town has reopened in both directions following the emergency repair of the Lower Church Street pedestrian bridge. The closure was necessitated after a heavy articulated flatbed truck, carrying a large industrial tank, struck the underside of the bridge. The impact caused the tank to fall onto the roadway and resulted in structural damage, including cracked concrete and exposed reinforcing steel.

Emergency crews and engineers worked through the night to secure the structure. Using two heavy-duty cranes, workers successfully lifted and realigned a 100-tonne section of the bridge. While the highway was cleared of debris and reopened in time for the Monday morning commute, officials noted that further remedial and aesthetic repairs will be required.

The driver of the truck has been arrested, and the vehicle has been impounded. The City of Cape Town has indicated its intention to hold the trucking company accountable for all costs and damages resulting from the incident.
