Cape Town named top value winter sun destination for UK travellers

A new report from Post Office Travel Money has identified Cape Town, South Africa, as the best-value winter sun destination for UK travellers. The Winter Sun Holiday Costs Barometer evaluated 24 popular locations based on the affordability of tourist staples, such as evening meals, beverages, insect repellent, and sun lotion, though it did not include flights or accommodation costs.

Cape Town ranked first, with prices for typical tourist goods dropping by 9.7 per cent since March. A three-course meal for two, including a bottle of house wine, cost £39.26 in Cape Town, whereas Scarborough, Tobago, was the most expensive location surveyed at £119.26. Other high-value destinations included Mombasa, Kenya, at £42.78 and Tokyo, Japan, at £48.50.

Among European resorts, the Algarve in Portugal, Costa del Sol in Spain, and Tenerife in the Canary Islands were the most affordable. The study also noted that four of the top ten cheapest destinations are located in Asia, including Penang, Malaysia; Phuket, Thailand; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Tokyo, Japan.
