Cape Town settlement faces severe sanitation crisis

An investigation in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East, Cape Town, revealed a severe sanitation crisis. Out of 470 communal toilets inspected, only 45 were found to be in working condition.

Community leaders report that more than 4,000 families have faced these conditions for over eight years. Residents frequently resort to using nearby bushes or portable flush toilets provided by the City. Many communal toilets lack privacy due to missing doors, while others are missing toilet bowls or buckets. Residents expressed concerns regarding safety and dignity, particularly for women, children, and the elderly who must navigate these conditions at night.

Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, stated that there are 451 communal toilets and 1,625 portable flush toilets in the settlement. He acknowledged that 105 communal toilets are missing doors and noted that an order has been placed to replace them.
