Cape Town woman fined for illegal possession of 145 reptiles
Jacqueline Hewett, a resident of Woodstock, has been fined R250,000 by the Cape Town Regional Court following her conviction on six charges related to the unlawful acquisition, possession, and keeping of 145 reptiles. The animals, which included snakes, geckos, and lizards, were discovered in March 2023 at a shop in Observatory and at Hewett's home.
The reptiles involved included protected, endangered, alien invasive, and prohibited species. In addition to the fine, Hewett received a two-year prison sentence that was wholly suspended for five years, contingent on her not being convicted of any wildlife-related offences during that period. She has also been disqualified from obtaining any permits to keep wild animals in captivity in the Western Cape for five years.
