Cape Verde government provides aid following Fogo island accident

Following a tragic accident on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde that claimed 25 lives, the local municipality of São Filipe and the national government have announced financial and social support measures for the victims' families. Each victim's family will receive 907 euros (100,000 escudos), with payments calculated per victim rather than per household. In addition to monetary aid, authorities are providing food baskets and psychological support through a crisis office.

Survivors transferred to Praia are receiving accommodation and meals near Agostinho Neto Hospital. Long-term recovery plans are being developed, including housing interventions and income-generating activities for affected families. Regarding funeral arrangements, the municipality has waived burial fees and provided coffins.

At the São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital, families continue to gather to check on survivors. One survivor, an 11-year-old boy, remains in stable condition following surgery for various injuries, though he remains under medical observation. The tragedy has deeply impacted local communities, with many victims being relatives or schoolmates of other residents.
