Cape Winelands Airport to become aerospace hub with R10bn plan

Cape Winelands Airport, the former Fisantekraal Airfield outside Durbanville, is slated for a R10‑billion redevelopment that will transform it into an aerospace hub for the Western Cape. The plan, led by RSA Aero and supported by Stellenbosch University, includes an “Aerospace Village” for space‑flight and aviation firms, a dedicated drone corridor, an expanded satellite‑engineering centre and new aviation qualification programmes. Letters of intent have already been signed by several companies. Strategic partnerships have been announced with construction firm WBHO, property developer Growthpoint Properties and Berlin‑based airport specialist sigma, a Munich Airport International subsidiary. Architects Boogertman + Partners and sigma will design the new terminal and related infrastructure, with works expected to start in late 2026 and commissioning aimed for late 2028. The project has received environmental authorisation and is classified as a “strategic integrated project” by Infrastructure South Africa, obliging state bodies to prioritise its approvals.
