Capital Bank delays branch reopening amid service disruptions
Capital Bank has postponed the progressive reopening of its branches in Haiti following a week of technical disruptions. The institution announced on Wednesday, October 7, that ongoing verifications required to ensure a secure restart of operations are taking longer than anticipated.
The disruptions, which began around October 2, have affected various services, including online banking, branch access, and certain ATMs. While the bank has not provided a specific date for full resumption of activities, it noted that credit and prepaid cards remain functional.
Adding complexity to the situation, the ransomware group LockBit has claimed responsibility for an attack, alleging they possess the bank's data and threatening to release it by October 19. While the bank previously characterized the issue as a technical incident affecting its central system and maintained that customer data was not compromised, it has not explicitly confirmed or denied the cyberattack claims in its most recent communications.
