Capitanes de la CDMX expresses interest in NBA expansion to Mexico
The Capitanes de la Ciudad de México have expressed formal interest in hosting an NBA franchise, should the league decide to expand into Mexico. During a season uniform presentation, Vice Chairman Ignacio Abascal stated that the organization has worked to demonstrate the country's capacity to support such a project, noting that the local market and fanbase are prepared.
Speculation regarding expansion has intensified following reports that economic bids for potential expansion slots in Seattle have been lower than anticipated. This has led NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to consider Mexico City as a serious alternative. While a new team in Las Vegas is considered nearly certain, the NBA aims to reach 32 franchises by the start of the 2028 season.
Currently, the Capitanes serve as the NBA G League’s only team in Latin America, playing home games at Arena CDMX.
