Cappadocia hot air balloons used for cervical cancer awareness
Medical professionals held the International Colposcopy Course and Symposium in Nevşehir, Cappadocia, to raise awareness about cervical cancer. The event was organized by the Turkish Gynecologic Oncology Society (TRSGO) and the Turkish Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy Society (TRSCCP), with support from the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO).
To draw public and tourist attention, scientists used Cappadocia’s iconic hot air balloons to display banners emphasizing the importance of HPV vaccination, early diagnosis, and screening. Prof. Dr. Murat Gültekin, President of the European Association of Gynecologic Cancer Prevention, stated that cervical cancer is a preventable and eradicable disease.
According to Gültekin, hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed with HPV-related cancers annually worldwide, while approximately 3,000 to 4,000 women in Turkey receive such a diagnosis each year. He noted that while screening programs in Turkey are successful, expanding vaccination and screening efforts is essential to eliminating the disease.
