Capsule wardrobe experiment: Living with only 20 items for a year
An individual shared the results of a year-long experiment attempting to live with a capsule wardrobe consisting of only approximately 20 clothing items across all four seasons.
The experiment was initiated to combat the paradox of choice and the clutter caused by years of excessive purchasing, such as buying items on sale or for hypothetical future needs. The author noted that despite having a large wardrobe previously, they often felt they had nothing to wear and struggled with the seasonal task of rotating and storing unused clothing.
By transitioning to a minimal collection, the author reported a sense of relief and found that having fewer options actually simplified the daily decision-making process. The process began by categorizing all existing clothing into three distinct groups to determine what was truly necessary.
