Captain Smit Machchhar hailed as hero after mid-air attack
Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is recovering in a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after being attacked by a co-pilot during a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. The incident, which involved a knife attack, forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing.
Machchhar is credited with preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster and saving the lives of 174 passengers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him a ‘true hero,’ while former U.S. President Donald Trump also hailed his bravery.
The attacking co-pilot, identified as an Omani national, reportedly attempted to crash the plane. Following the emergency landing, passengers were able to return to Tel Aviv on a different Flydubai aircraft. The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that Machchhar is in stable condition and is receiving medical attention.
