Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Originated from Rejected Zelda Pitch
Nintendo’s puzzle‑adventure Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker began as a pitch for a new The Legend of Zelda game. Level designer Shinya Hiratake created a detailed handmade diorama to demonstrate the concept, proposing Link as the protagonist. Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s creative director, rejected the idea, interpreting the model as a toy rather than a game proposal. Disappointed, Hiratake destroyed the prototype, saying, “I burned it. It was such a bad memory that I decided to let it die.”
The gameplay ideas were later adapted for Super Mario 3D World, where the non‑jumping, puzzle‑focused stages became a separate spin‑off. Miyamoto eventually approved the reworked concept, leading to the release of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, co‑directed by Hiratake.
