Capuchin friars to leave historic Italian convents

The Capuchin Order is reducing its presence in several Italian locations, leading to the closure of historic convents that have served local communities for centuries.

In Offida, recent celebrations for Beato Bernardo concluded amid concerns regarding the future of the Beato Bernardo convent. Founded in 1614, the site has been a religious and cultural pillar for generations, but an aging population of friars and a lack of new recruits have put its continued operation at risk.

In Barbarano di Salò, Brescia, the Capuchin friars are scheduled to depart their convent between October and November. This move is part of a broader downsizing plan by the Order across northwestern Italy. While the religious presence will end, the facility is expected to transition to a social function. The spaces will be handed over to the charitable association Abitare la Vita, which will use the complex to support vulnerable individuals and families through housing and assistance. The future of the attached church remains undecided and will be determined by the Diocese of Brescia.
