CAQM directs Punjab and Haryana to curb stubble burning
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has instructed the governments of Punjab and Haryana to take strict action against stubble burning to control rising air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) and surrounding areas. During review meetings in Chandigarh, CAQM Chairperson Rajesh Verma emphasized that crop residue management plans must be effectively implemented on the ground rather than remaining merely on paper.
To monitor and prevent burning, authorities are reviewing the use of satellite-based alerts, drones, and low-cost sensors. The commission also stressed the importance of providing farmers with necessary machinery and strengthening the collection, transport, and disposal of crop residue.
In Punjab, the Punjab Pollution Control Board reported 510 stubble burning incidents as of October 22. Following physical inspections, environmental compensation was imposed in 184 cases, totaling 9.30 lakh rupees in fines. Amritsar and Tarn Taran were identified as significant areas for these incidents. Additionally, warning notices were issued to 227 nodal and supervisory officers, and four FIRs have been registered.
