Car Air‑Conditioning Increases Fuel Use by Up to 20% – Savings Tips and Sunshade Advice

Operating a car’s air‑conditioning system draws power from the engine, raising fuel consumption by roughly 5 % to 20 % depending on temperature, vehicle size and driving conditions. For a typical car that uses 7 L per 100 km, the extra load can add about 1 L to 3 L of fuel over a 300 km trip. The impact is greater at high outside temperatures and during the first minutes of operation.

Fuel‑saving measures include setting the thermostat to a moderate 22‑24 °C, using the recirculation mode once the cabin is cooled, keeping the system well‑maintained (clean filter and proper refrigerant level), and avoiding frequent on/off cycling. At lower city speeds, opening windows may be more economical, while at highway speeds window opening creates aerodynamic drag that can offset the AC’s load.

For hybrid and electric cars, the AC draws electricity from the battery, reducing driving range by about 5 % to 15 % under heavy use. An inexpensive windshield sunshade can keep the interior 10‑12 °C cooler when parked in the sun, lessening the time and energy the AC needs to cool the cabin. Additional heat‑reduction steps include parking in shade, using rear‑window shades, covering dark upholstery, and leaving windows slightly ajar for ventilation.
