Car insurance costs in Germany rise, prompting savings advice
Car insurance premiums in Germany are facing upward pressure, with consumer advocates warning of price increases through 2027. To mitigate rising costs, experts suggest several strategies for policyholders.
According to the Verivox car insurance index, removing young drivers (aged 18) from a policy can reduce premiums by up to 39 percent if they no longer use the vehicle regularly. Adjusting the deductible is another significant lever; increasing the deductible to 150 euros for partial coverage or 300 euros for full coverage can reduce costs by an average of 22 percent, while higher deductibles of 500 or 1,000 euros can offer savings of up to 34 percent.
The Verbraucherzentrale NRW notes that many households could save 100 euros or more by switching providers. Consumers are advised to review their contracts and compare rates during October and November, as the deadline for canceling most annual policies is November 30. Additionally, existing customers may be able to secure discounts by contacting their current insurers directly to request price reductions.
