Car insurance coverage for accidents occurring on ferries

Car insurance coverage remains valid within ferry garages, as the space is legally treated similarly to a public road. If a driver causes damage to another vehicle during boarding or disembarking, their mandatory third-party liability insurance will cover the damages to the third party. Conversely, if a driver is hit by another vehicle, the insurance company of the responsible driver provides compensation.

Since traffic police are not present on ships, the vessel's competent authority is responsible for recording accidents. Drivers are advised to request that the crew officially record the incident in the ship's logbook before disembarking. It is recommended to photograph the other driver's registration, driver's license, and insurance policy to facilitate the process.

In cases where the other vehicle is uninsured, drivers should request a formal declaration from the other party via gov.gr. Ferry companies are liable for compensation if physical injuries occur to pedestrians or if the company fails to maintain necessary safety measures, such as separate entrances and exits for vehicles and pedestrians. However, drivers remain responsible for vehicle control even if crew members provide parking instructions.
