Car insurance coverage for bicycle and animal accidents

Car insurance coverage varies depending on the nature of the accident, such as collisions involving cyclists or animals.

In California, motorists are legally liable for accidents involving bicyclists. Under the California Vehicle Code, bicycle riders hold the same legal standing as drivers on the roadway. An at-fault driver’s liability policy serves as the primary source of compensation for a cyclist’s injuries, lost income, and property damage. Effective January 1, 2025, California’s mandatory minimum coverage amounts include $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 per crash, and $15,000 for property damage. If a driver is working at the time of an accident, an employer’s commercial policy may provide higher coverage limits through the doctrine of respondeat superior.

Regarding animal strikes, most comprehensive and collision insurance policies cover vehicle damage caused by hitting an animal. However, liability insurance typically only protects against damage to others and does not cover the policyholder’s own vehicle in an animal-related collision. The extent of coverage depends on specific policy details and the circumstances of the incident.
