Car owners urged to fix windshield chips and curb rust early to avoid costly repairs

A small chip on a windshield can quickly develop into a long crack. Repair is feasible when the chip is no larger than about 5 mm, lies outside the driver’s direct field of view, is at least 10 cm from the glass edge and does not reach the inner lamination layer. Early intervention in a workshop greatly improves the chance of a safe, inexpensive fix; otherwise full glass replacement may be required.

Rust remains a major problem for vehicles of all ages, affecting brands such as Subaru, Suzuki and Honda. Corrosion begins with minor paint damage or trapped moisture, especially in harsh winter conditions. Preventive measures include regular under‑carriage washing, drying after exposure to salt, applying anti‑corrosion treatments (oils, lanolin, waxes, protective coatings), and promptly repairing paint chips. Consistent maintenance can extend a car’s lifespan and avert expensive body‑work repairs.
