Britax Römer and Axkid child seats fail safety crash tests

European consumer organizations, including ADAC and Stiftung Warentest, have issued urgent safety warnings following failed crash tests of two child car seat models. The affected products are the Britax Römer Baby-Safe Pro (when used with the Vario Base 5Z Isofix base) and the Axkid Minikid Core.

In frontal impact tests at 50 km/h, the Britax Römer Baby-Safe Pro exhibited a critical failure when set in a reclined position; the belt buckle opened, causing the test dummy to be ejected from the seat. Experts recommend using this model only in an upright position or securing it directly with a vehicle's three-point belt without the Isofix base, which passed the tests.

The Axkid Minikid Core also failed significantly in a reclined position. During impact, the support foot unlocked and retracted, and the belt buckle broke out of the seat shell. Axkid has responded by stopping sales of the Minikid Core and initiating a voluntary recall, offering the Minikid Pro 4 as a free replacement for affected customers.

Britax Römer is currently investigating the cause of the buckle failure and has not yet initiated a recall or exchange program.
