Car trunk volume measurements and practical capacity
Automotive trunk capacity in liters does not always correlate with practical storage space. While a higher liter rating suggests more room, the actual usability of a trunk depends on its shape and internal design.
In Europe, the VDA method is frequently used to measure trunk volume. This process involves placing standardized rectangular blocks, measuring 20 x 10 x 5 centimeters (each representing one liter), into the space to account for irregular shapes.
A paradox can occur where a vehicle with a smaller theoretical volume is more useful than one with a larger rating. For example, a wide, low, and regularly shaped trunk may accommodate more luggage than a deeper but narrower space obstructed by wheel arches or hidden compartments.
