Caraballeda medical center closes after two months of earthquake relief

The community medical center known as the ‘Hospital McDonald’s’ in Caraballeda, La Guaira, has concluded its operations after two months of providing free medical assistance to earthquake victims. Established on June 26 following the seismic events of June 24, the center operated out of a McDonald’s restaurant facility.

Led by surgeon Fernando Jaime, a team of approximately 80 volunteers—including doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, rescuers, and veterinarians—provided 24-hour care. The center treated an average of 150 patients daily for issues such as respiratory ailments, fractures, dehydration, and psychological trauma. The veterinary team also assisted hundreds of pets separated from their owners during the disaster.

While the physical site has closed, organizers announced a transition to a mobile primary care unit to continue patient follow-up and reach vulnerable sectors. Dr. Jaime emphasized that while these community efforts are vital, they should not serve as a permanent substitute for a strengthened public health system. The volunteer group is currently seeking private support for fuel, supplies, and equipment to maintain mobile operations.
