56‑year‑old arrested for deliberate forest fire in Morano Calabro, Calabria
Carabinieri of the Forestal Corps arrested a 56‑year‑old resident of Morano Calabro after he deliberately set fire to vegetation in the locality of Vado, outside the Pollino National Park. The blaze consumed Mediterranean scrub and nearby agricultural fields close to a stand of coniferous and oak trees. Investigators, who had been monitoring the suspect for some time, captured the act on video showing a car pulling up to the roadside and the man igniting the vegetation before fleeing. The suspect was detained on the spot and transferred to the Castrovillari prison. Regional fire units and park teams quickly contained the fire, preventing further spread. The arrest follows a series of recent wildfires across Calabria, prompting intensified patrols and aerial surveillance. The local branch of Forza Italia praised the operation, thanking the Carabinieri, the police, the regional authorities and the Pollino Park staff, and called for firm penalties against those who endanger the environment and public safety.
