Ndrangheta drug bust sees 35 arrests across Italy

The Carabinieri, coordinated by the Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia of Reggio Calabria, conducted a large‑scale anti‑drug operation that spanned multiple Italian regions. A court order led to the arrest of 35 individuals on 47 charges, including mafia‑linked drug trafficking, weapons possession and attempted kidnapping.

Investigators reconstructed the narcotics network of the Alvaro di Sinopoli clan, which imported cocaine from South America through the Gioia Tauro port with the assistance of some port workers. The drug was then distributed to markets in Catania and Palermo using vehicles supplied by corrupt rental agencies. The probe, which began with analysis of encrypted “SKY ECC” chats, resulted in the seizure of more than 300 kg of cocaine and thwarted several violent acts. The operation involved provincial police commands in twelve provinces and the helicopter squad “Cacciatori”.
