Carabinieri NAS increase inspections of nursing homes near Rome

The Carabinieri NAS (Nucleo Antisofisticazioni e Sanità) are intensifying surprise inspections at nursing homes and elderly care residences in Rome and its surrounding province. These measures aim to combat the phenomenon known as ‘summer parking,’ where families temporarily admit non-self-sufficient elderly relatives to care facilities solely during the vacation months.

Authorities noted that these temporary admissions can lead to overcrowding, hygiene deficiencies, and insufficient staffing levels, particularly when facility personnel are also on summer leave. The inspections focus on verifying guest numbers against authorized bed capacities, checking environmental cleanliness, ensuring meal adequacy, and reviewing individual assistance plans to prevent improper physical or pharmacological restraints.
