Carabinieri seize tools used in illegal excavations near Enza river

Carabinieri have seized equipment used in illegal archaeological excavations along the banks of the Enza river in the mountainous area of the Reggio Emilia province. The investigation, coordinated by the Reggio Emilia Prosecutor's Office, uncovered unauthorized digging within a natural cave located in a remote forested area.

During the operation, Carabinieri Forestali and the Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale of Bologna discovered excavation tools and waste from an improvised campsite. Authorities used drones and camera traps to assist in the investigation.

Under Italian law, archaeological finds belong to the State, and all excavations must be authorized by the Ministry of Culture. Unauthorized activities are punishable under Article 175 of the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, with penalties including up to one year of arrest and fines.
