Carabinieri step up summer safety checks in Ponza, Ventotene and Tropea
The Carabinieri launched an extensive territorial control operation on the Pontine islands of Ponza and Ventotene. Coordinated by the Provincial Command of Latina and supported by forest units and the local boat service, patrols focused on historic centres, nightlife areas and coastal zones. The effort resulted in inspections of 209 individuals, 12 vehicles, eight boats (23 passengers) and two commercial premises, targeting impaired driving, drug use and public‑health violations.
In the Calabrian town of Tropea, Carabinieri units from the local station, the Nucleo Operativo and the Radiomobile conducted nighttime checks on 45 vehicles and 160 people, carried out five personal and vehicle searches and referred seven people to the magistrate. Six drivers were charged with drunk driving (blood alcohol 0.86‑1.37 g/L) and one refused testing; licences were withdrawn. Both operations aim to ensure public safety amid heightened tourist traffic this summer.
