Carabobo teachers union demands higher wages and vacation bonuses

The Regional Teachers' Union in Carabobo (SER) reported that teachers at basic and secondary levels continue to receive very low salaries after four years without any official pay increase. Union president José Gregorio Medina said the vacation bonus paid through the Patria system amounted to only about $60, and that the bonuses are set unilaterally by the employer without consultation with unions.

Retired teachers are reported to receive roughly $140 less than active teachers because they do not receive the formation bonus or other allowances. The union also highlighted the lack of essential benefits such as hospitalization, surgery, maternity and funeral insurance. SER said it will begin the new school year on 15 September and will maintain its demands for wage and benefit improvements, invoking constitutional protections.
