Caracas begins repairs on heritage sites following seismic damage

Repairs are underway in Caracas following structural damage caused by earthquakes on June 24. The Presidential Commission for the Recovery of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) has begun rehabilitation work within the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. These efforts, supported by university authorities and the Council for Preservation and Development (Copred), are being carried out across several faculties, including Architecture and Urbanism, Engineering, Economics and Social Sciences, Humanities and Education, and Sciences. Work includes repairing cracks, masonry, roofing, and lighting systems, while metal supports have been installed in critical areas like the Plaza Cubierta to ensure stability under UNESCO heritage protocols.

Additionally, the Unidad Educativa Patronato San José de Tarbes is coordinating recovery efforts for its century-old facilities in La Candelaria. The school suffered severe damage, including the collapse of its library and damage to the second floor. While internal repairs are progressing to prepare for the return of 480 students, the institution is awaiting authorization from Fundapatrimonio to perform necessary external works or controlled demolitions in high-risk areas, as the building is classified as cultural heritage.
