Caraguatatuba hosts Beach Sambo World Championship
Caraguatatuba will host the Beach Sambo World Championship on September 12 and 13. The event is part of the Circuito Litoral Norte initiative, which aims to boost regional tourism and stimulate the local economy across the municipalities of Bertioga, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabela, São Sebastião, and Ubatuba.
The competition features 142 registered participants, including athletes, technical staff, medical professionals, and officials. Delegations from Africa, Europe, Asia, Central America, South America, and the Middle East are confirmed to attend. Participating nations include Afghanistan, Congo, Spain, Guinea, Moldova, Sierra Leone, Costa Rica, Haiti, Philippines, Netherlands, Brazil, Russia, Romania, Cuba, Mexico, Israel, and Mali, with Venezuela also expected.
Sambo is a martial art and combat sport originating from the former Soviet Union. The name is derived from the Russian phrase ‘SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya’, meaning ‘self-defense without weapons’. The sport incorporates techniques from various traditions, such as judo and wrestling.
