Caral civilization research expands through China-Peru archaeological partnership

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a water cult within the ancient Vichama civilization, a site linked to the Caral civilization in Peru. Recent excavations have revealed various artifacts, including serpent carvings on bone, wood, and deer horn. Archaeologist Ruth Shady, director of the Caral Archaeological Zone, noted that the serpent represents the river and served as a symbol of fertility and abundance during periods of severe drought.

In a separate development, the Chinese Institute of Archaeology, Peru’s Ministry of Culture, and the National University of San Marcos have signed an agreement to launch a joint archaeological research project. This initiative will focus on the Caral civilization, one of the oldest in the Americas, and includes fieldwork, heritage conservation, and specialist training. This marks the first time a Chinese archaeological institution will participate in excavations in South America, strengthening cultural ties between China and Peru.
