Caransebeș-Timișoara-Arad railway modernization shows uneven progress
Modernization works on the Caransebeș-Timișoara-Arad railway corridor are progressing at uneven speeds across its four segments. According to data from CFR Infrastructură, the overall physical execution stage for the corridor is approximately 47%.
Progress varies significantly by lot. Lot 2 (Lugoj-Timișoara Est) is the most advanced at 84.93% completion. In contrast, Lot 1 (Caransebeș-Lugoj) is the least advanced, sitting at only 15.07% after a marginal increase of 0.22 percentage points during the August-September 2026 monitoring period. Lot 3 (Timișoara Est-Ronaț) stands at 28.01%, and Lot 4 (Ronaț-Arad) is at 36.63%.
On Lot 1, current activities include earthworks, culvert construction, track and sleeper installation at the Caransebeș Triaj, and work on electrification and signaling systems. Archaeological research is also ongoing along the route. The contract, valued at 1.34 billion lei (excluding VAT), was signed in December 2023 with the RailWorks association, led by Alstom Transport SA and including Arcada Company SA. Once completed, estimated for the fourth quarter of 2028, the line will allow train speeds of 120-160 km/h.
