Carapicuíba police thwart prison escape plot

Police in Carapicuíba, Brazil, have thwarted a prison escape attempt involving six inmates at the 1st District Police station. During a search of the unit, authorities seized a revolver with ammunition, mobile phones, saws, and knives.

Investigators believe the inmates planned to overpower a jailer and attack officers on duty to facilitate their escape. Police are also examining a local power outage that occurred near the station, investigating whether it was intentionally triggered to assist the breakout.

Five of the six suspects are currently under investigation for the murder of businessman Marcelo Magalhães de Almeida, whose body was found near the Cotia River. The sixth inmate, Osimael Fonseca Pontes, known as ‘Fera,’ is identified as the alleged mastermind behind the escape plan. Authorities noted that Pontes is serving time for homicide and is suspected of having links to the criminal organization PCC.
