Carauari, Amazonas health access underscores rural deaths
In the remote municipality of Carauari in Brazil's Amazonas state, residents face journeys of hours or even days to reach urban health facilities. The area spans more than 25,700 square kilometres, larger than several countries, and is criss‑crossed by the Juruá River. Lack of timely medical care has resulted in tragic losses, such as the death of Francisco Solivan Peres de Araújo’s mother when he was two, after a hemorrhage during childbirth.
A rescue‑boat system was introduced by the municipality in the early 1990s to respond to emergencies, but long distances still cause delays. An Agência Brasil expedition documented the challenge, spending about 35 hours on an express boat from Manaus to Carauari and additional four‑hour trips to reach outlying communities. Francisco Solivan, now president of the Association of Rural Residents of the Sustainable Development Reserve Uacari (Amaru), says these stories remain common despite the rescue service.
