Caravelí mayor disputes territorial boundaries with Ica over mineral-rich land

Roberto Soto Riveros, the provincial mayor of Caravelí, has raised an alarm regarding a territorial dispute with the Ica region. The controversy centers on the Tres Hermanas and Yanyarina sectors, which could result in Caravelí losing approximately 1,500 square kilometers of land.

The disputed area is highly significant due to its vast mineral wealth, including iron, copper, gold, silver, rhenium, and cobalt. Soto Riveros highlighted a major economic disparity, noting that while Caravelí receives about 4 million soles from mining activity, Marcona receives approximately 600 million soles. He emphasized that the province exports over $500 million in gold annually, yet the local revenue does not reflect this scale of production.

The mayor has called upon Arequipa’s representatives in Congress to defend the historical and legal boundaries of the province. He also announced plans to travel to Lima to meet with the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to present his arguments and prevent territorial expansion by the Ica Regional Government.
