Carbon monoxide exposure linked to lower Parkinson's risk

A study published in Jama Neurology suggests that carbon monoxide (CO) exposure may play a protective role against Parkinson's disease, potentially explaining the long-observed link between smoking and a reduced risk of the condition.

Research involving over 500,000 Chinese adults over a 12-year period found that higher levels of CO in exhaled breath were associated with a lower risk of developing Parkinson's, even among individuals who had never smoked. This finding suggests that the protective effect may be attributed to the compound itself rather than the act of smoking.

Experts, including neuroscientists from the University of Otago, caution against interpreting these findings as a recommendation to increase CO exposure. They emphasize that while an association exists, causation has not been proven, and carbon monoxide remains highly dangerous to human health, capable of causing heart disease, stroke, and death by displacing oxygen in the blood.
