Carbon monoxide poisonings rise in Romania
Carbon monoxide poisoning incidents have risen significantly in Romania during the first eight months of 2026. Within the Delgaz Grid service area, 28 people have been affected by intoxication, a figure more than double the 12 victims recorded during the same period in 2025.
Six fatalities have been confirmed so far this year, compared to two deaths in 2025. The poisonings have been reported across several counties, including Mureș, Bistrița-Năsăud, Alba, Timiș, Cluj, Neamț, and Hunedoara. One victim was identified as a 24-year-old man who died due to a faulty exhaust system in his thermal power plant.
Authorities attribute these tragedies to damaged, clogged, or unsealed chimney and exhaust systems, as well as the use of defective stoves or gas appliances for heating. Experts recommend regular cleaning of chimneys and professional inspections of gas installations to prevent further deaths.
