Carboneras mayor seeks cooperation over El Algarrobico hotel dispute
Salvador Hernández, the mayor of Carboneras, has called for institutional cooperation to resolve the long-standing urban planning conflict regarding the El Algarrobico hotel located in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This request follows an official announcement by the Junta de Andalucía to initiate proceedings to restore territorial legality, which includes requiring the developer, Azata, to submit a project for the building's demolition.
The mayor emphasized that the municipality has suffered for over two decades due to the continuous judicial and media scrutiny surrounding the site. While reaffirming the local government's commitment to absolute respect for the law—noting that the council previously moved to annul the hotel's construction license—Hernández urged all administrations to act with “height of vision” to ensure a final solution that does not further damage the image or interests of Carboneras.
