Carcassonne court sentences police officer for assault
A French court in Carcassonne has sentenced a 43-year-old national police officer to six months of suspended prison time for voluntary violence. The sentencing, delivered on November 6, 2026, also includes a one-year ban on exercising duties on public roads.
The conviction stems from an incident on June 21, 2026, during the Fête de la Musique. Video footage showed the officer violently throwing a 29-year-old man to the ground during an intervention for noise disturbances. The man died twelve to thirteen days after the assault. However, prosecutors noted that an autopsy found no direct link between the filmed incident and the cause of death.
During the trial, the officer claimed he acted to protect a municipal police officer, though the court noted that other officers present did not report feeling in danger. A collective has formed to demand justice for the deceased man, known as Youssef.
