The victim, a 29-year-old man, died of a cardiac arrest on July 3, approximately two weeks after the encounter. However, Prosecutor Géraldine Labialle stated that current investigations, including an autopsy performed on July 9, show no causal link between the police intervention and the death, noting that the autopsy found no suspicious traumatic lesions and suggested a toxic cause due to the victim's history of poly-drug use.

The Marseille branch of the IGPN has been tasked with investigating the officer's use of force. This incident follows a separate scandal involving municipal police officers in Carcassonne who were recorded making racist, sexist, and conspiracy-related remarks. In response to that earlier matter, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez ordered an inspection of the municipal police service, and the city administration reported that the officers involved were immediately suspended.
