Cardenal Samoré and Pino Hachado mountain passes closed due to weather
Severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, high winds, and ice, have forced the closure of several international mountain passes between Chile and Argentina.
The Cardenal Samoré International Pass, located in the Los Lagos region, is currently closed to all vehicle types. While it was initially open to cars and buses, a multi-vehicle accident involving two Argentine vehicles occurred near the border due to slippery road conditions and the need to deploy snow chains. No fatalities were reported, but the incident has contributed to the decision to suspend transit until road maintenance crews can ensure safety.
In the Neuquén region, the Pino Hachado International Pass remains closed throughout the day due to a combination of ice, snow, and whiteout conditions. Meanwhile, the Icalma International Pass is reported as open, though travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution and carry snow chains. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather conditions fluctuate.
