Cardiac surgeon links refined carbs to heart attacks; neurologists stress lifestyle for stroke prevention

Cardiac surgeon Dr. Philip Ovadia warns that foods high in refined carbohydrates and ultra‑processed products—such as white bread, breakfast cereals, granola bars, flavored yogurts and sugary drinks—promote insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and the formation of unstable arterial plaques that can trigger heart attacks. He cites American Heart Association guidance that a heart‑healthy diet should emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein sources and unsaturated oils while limiting processed foods and added sugars.

Neurologists add that 60‑70% of strokes are preventable because the majority are linked to modifiable risk factors. Key contributors include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and sedentary habits. Prompt recognition of stroke symptoms—facial droop, speech difficulties, unilateral weakness or loss of balance—is critical, as timely medical intervention can markedly improve outcomes.
